A lowpass filter can double as a mixer channel by treating cutoff-open as full send and cutoff-zero as mute
A voltage-controlled lowpass filter not only shapes timbre but can function as a crude VCA/channel fader: when the cutoff is opened fully, the signal passes at full amplitude; when the cutoff is reduced to zero, the signal disappears. Bastl Instruments’ Cinnamon explicitly supports this use — it is presented as a combination filter/mixer. This technique saves Eurorack HP by removing the need for dedicated VCA modules on every voice, but introduces a musical coloring: approaching zero-cutoff changes tone before muting, which may be desirable or undesirable depending on context.
Examples
Bastl Instruments Cinnamon patched on a synth voice: open cutoff = voice present at full level; close cutoff = voice muted. No separate VCA or mixer module needed for that voice.
Assessment
Describe the timbral difference between muting a voice with a VCA (amplitude goes to zero) vs. a fully-closed lowpass filter. In what musical context is the filter-mute desirable and when is it a problem?
