Eurorack portability depends on case size, handle design, and whether the lid accommodates patch cables
A key case selection variable is whether the system will travel to performances or remain studio-based. Portability encompasses: physical size (small enough to carry), presence of a handle or compatible bag, and whether the lid can close with patch cables inserted. Some cases have lids too tight to accommodate cables, meaning patches must be broken down before transport. This is a performance-critical distinction: a modular performer who wants to carry a pre-patched system to a show needs a case explicitly designed for patched transport. Studio-only systems have no such constraint and can prioritize size and capacity over portability.
Examples
A Submodular case (used by Noise Engineering staff) fits in overhead bins on planes and accommodates pre-patched transport. A Doepfer monster case is large, stackable, and has lids for storage but is not designed for patched airline travel.
Assessment
Name three portability factors to consider when choosing a Eurorack case. Explain why lid design matters differently for a performer versus a studio-only user.
