Beginners should choose a Eurorack case with built-in power to avoid the complexity of separate PSU installation

Eurorack power can be supplied two ways: cases with built-in PSU and busboards (plug in, power on) or cases requiring a separate power module or DIY PSU and busboard installation. For beginners, choosing a case with built-in power removes a significant technical barrier: separate PSU installation requires understanding rail specifications, busboard connections, and safe wiring practices. The tradeoff is that built-in power units may have lower headroom than after-market PSUs, and they cannot be easily upgraded. But for a first system, the reduction in cognitive load outweighs the limitation.

Examples

The Intellijel Palette case has built-in power and 1U utility rows — plug-and-play. A DIY wooden frame case requires purchasing a separate PSU, mounting it, and running busboard rails before powering any modules.

Assessment

Explain why built-in power is recommended for a beginner’s first Eurorack case. What is the main technical risk of installing a separate PSU incorrectly?

“If you're starting out and haven't dealt with Eurorack power before, getting a case with power built-in is a great choice.”
