Downtempo is atmospheric electronic music with beats around 90 BPM, slower than dance music
Downtempo (also called downbeat) is a broad genre label for electronic music with an atmospheric, layered sound and beats slower than typical dance music — usually around 90 BPM. It sits between ambient music (little or no rhythm) and dance music (120+ BPM), sharing ambient’s mood-driven aesthetic but adding a more prominent rhythmic foundation. The source unites it by three markers: atmospheric sound (artists focus on layered sounds and mood more than catchy melodies or riffs); slow beats around 90 BPM; and gentle melodies (more melodic phrases than straightforward ambient). Downtempo is used both as a listening genre and as a functional DJ tool — played in relaxation clubs or as warm-up/cool-down music during sets.
Examples
Massive Attack ‘Teardrop’ (~96 BPM), Portishead ‘Glory Box’ (~88 BPM), Bonobo ‘Kong’ (~90 BPM). All atmospheric, rhythm-present but not dancefloor-driving.
Assessment
A producer asks you to make a ‘downtempo track’. What BPM range do you target? Name two of the genre’s defining characteristics beyond tempo, and say how the arrangement differs from an ambient track.
