Drum and bass is dominated by independent labels run by DJ-producers, which maintained genre control outside major labels until 2016

DnB developed a distinctive label ecosystem: major labels (Sony, Universal) showed minimal interest until BMG acquired RAM Records in 2016. The genre was sustained by a network of independent labels founded and operated by DJ-producers — Metalheadz (Goldie), RAM Records (Andy C), Hospital Records (London Elektricity), Reinforced Records (4hero), V Recordings (Bryan Gee/Jumpin Jack Frost), Critical Music (Kasra), and others. This artist-led structure gave DnB unusual creative control for a globally distributed genre — BPM, sound, and subgenre direction were decided by practitioner communities rather than commercial A&R departments.

Examples

Hospital Records, run by London Elektricity, has operated independently since 1996, developing liquid DnB as a sub-brand. Its artist-label model — also producing studio albums, compilations, and DJ mixes — became a template for independent DnB labels globally.

Assessment

Explain how the independent label structure shaped DnB’s sonic development. What risks and advantages did artist-run labels provide compared to major label A&R control?

“Drum and bass is dominated by a small group of record labels. These are mainly run by DJ-producers.”
