Mala articulates a principle that runs counter to most music production instruction: ‘I think a lot of people think that when they make a contribution to a sound they want to try to add something, but you can contribute by taking away.’ He was ‘always on the black keys’ and building ‘straight bones and a three-note melody.’ DMZ records are credited as ‘built by Mala,’ ‘built by Loefah’ — the language of construction, not composition. The rationale is functional: ‘if you get the right frequency — if you’re able to channel that energy in its true light — then everything else is filler.’ This directly produced dubstep’s characteristic sparse texture: each element earned its place by not being removable.
