The mix engineer steers the listener's single-focus attention to what matters each moment

Listeners focus on roughly one thing at a time, everything else in peripheral “hearing”. The mix engineer’s job is to direct that attention to what is most important at each instant — momentarily lifting a small guitar fill during a vocal gap, then returning focus to the vocal — using volume automation so the song breathes from start to finish. Well-judged rides make the production more involving and can bring repetitive programmed parts alive.

Examples

Cranking a two-bar guitar fill just enough during a breath grabs attention, then dropping it back returns focus to the returning vocal.
