Compressors colour tone as well as reduce gain, which is why the controls matter

Although the technical purpose of compression is gain reduction, in practice compressors also change tone, sometimes markedly, even when compressing little. Learning the full control set lets you match the gain-reduction action to a signal’s specific dynamics and switch between characterful compressors to find the tone that best enhances a track while keeping the balance under control — presets alone rarely fit a given source.

Examples

A slap-bass part whose odd note leaps out needs a high ratio to tame only those peaks; the same compressor can also impart a tone you keep for its own sake once the level is controlled.

Assessment

Explain why compressors are described as doing more than reduce gain and how that motivates learning their full control set.
