Clave patterns doubled in speed adapt the Latin groove framework to a single faster bar
The standard son clave spans two bars. In popular music contexts, the same accent pattern at double speed fits within a single bar, making it compatible with faster genres. Double-speed clave is frequently heard in contemporary pop, African pop, and club music — sometimes played by a synth phrase, sometimes implied by kick and snare together, sometimes embedded in the melody. The relationship to the original clave may be subtle but the rhythmic ‘shape’ (which hits are emphasized) remains recognizable and provides the same sense of forward momentum and syncopation.
Examples
Double-speed 3-2 son clave compresses the two-bar pattern into one bar, so the three hits from bar 1 appear in the first half and the two hits from bar 2 appear in the second half.
Assessment
Listen to a pop track that uses double-speed clave. Mark where you hear the three-hit and two-hit groupings. How does the compressed version change the feeling compared to the two-bar original?
