The 230e envelope follower's transient pulse mode generates triggers only when a CV increase occurs — useful for extracting rhythmic info from complex audio

The 230e Triple Envelope Tracker has two pulse output behaviors selectable per channel. In normal mode (transient LED off), a pulse fires whenever the envelope CV exceeds the 5V sustain threshold. In transient mode (transient LED on), pulses fire only when the input CV shows a significant increase — regardless of the absolute level. This second mode is specifically suited to extracting rhythmic triggers from polyphonic or continuously active audio sources (like a drum mix), where simply thresholding on level would generate false triggers from sustained energy. The envelope follower also has variable decay time (0.1–10 seconds).

Examples

Patch a drum overhead microphone through the 230e in transient mode; route the pulse output to a 252e ring to trigger a sequence — drum attacks drive the sequencer without being confused by sustained cymbal decay.

Assessment

Explain the difference between normal and transient pulse modes on the 230e. For which use case is transient mode specifically recommended and why?

“If switched on, transient pulses are generated only when a significant c.v. increase occurs, independently of the level.”
