Transferring a breadboard circuit to a soldered PCB requires leaving the working breadboard intact until the permanent version is verified

A breadboard allows rapid prototyping without solder — components press into a matrix of connected holes and can be rearranged freely. Once a design is verified, it can be permanently soldered onto a circuit board. Collins’ Rule 18 is essential: always leave your original breadboard design intact and functional until you can prove that the soldered-up version works. The working breadboard becomes the reference for debugging the soldered version. IC sockets protect chips from soldering heat and allow replacement. Stranded wire (not solid) connects pots, jacks, and photocells so the wire flexes without breaking. A 0.1uF capacitor between the chip’s power pins, placed as close to the pins as possible, reduces noise and cross-talk.

Examples

Solder the oscillator circuit on a circuit board that mirrors the breadboard layout exactly; compare it against the working breadboard before connecting the battery.

Explain why IC sockets rather than direct soldering are recommended for chip placement, and describe what decoupling capacitors near power pins do.
