Berghain in Berlin has been described as 'possibly the current world capital of techno'

In Germany, noted techno clubs of the 1990s included Tresor and E-Werk in Berlin, Omen and Dorian Gray in Frankfurt, Ultraschall in Munich, and Stammheim in Kassel. In 2007, Berghain was cited as ‘possibly the current world capital of techno, much as E-Werk or Tresor were in their respective heydays.’ In the 2010s other German cities sustained the scene: Gewölbe (Cologne), Institut für Zukunft (Leipzig), Blitz Club (Munich), Robert Johnson (Offenbach). Outside Germany, Glasgow’s Sub Club has been associated with techno since the early 1990s, London’s Fabric and Egg gained notoriety, and Tbilisi’s Bassiani became notable in the 2010s.

Examples

The Berlin venue lineage Tresor (1991) → E-Werk → Berghain (2004) traces the institutional continuity of the Berlin techno aesthetic across three decades.
