Baltimore club emerged in the late 1980s by fusing house, UK rave, Miami bass and hip-house
Baltimore club is a regional US dance genre that emerged in the late 1980s when local DJs meshed several styles then gaining popularity: Chicago house, hardcore UK rave, Miami bass, and hip-house. The blend produced a sound faster and more percussive than any single source. Early DJ/producers such as Scottie B, DJ Equalizer, DJ Technics, and Frank Ski made the first popular records and established the genre’s vocabulary. Baltimore club matters as the root of a wider ‘club music’ lineage: its later derivatives, Philly club and Jersey club, both grew out of producers picking up Baltimore records and mutating the sound for their own cities.
Examples
Early Baltimore club records by Scottie B or DJ Technics show the hard kick pattern and rapid vocal chops that distinguish the genre from the Chicago house or Miami bass tracks it drew on.
