An algorave's minimal technical setup is full-range speakers plus a high-contrast projector in a dark room
The algorave guidelines give a concrete minimum-viable venue specification: full-range speakers (capable of reproducing bass to treble without band-limiting), a high contrast ratio projector (so code is readable in low light), a small dark room (to maximise projector visibility and dancefloor intimacy), optionally with fog or haze (to scatter light dramatically and enhance atmosphere). ‘Rows of seats’ explicitly disqualifies a space from being called an algorave — the format requires standing/dancing room. These specs are not arbitrary: code legibility and sonic clarity together enable the characteristic algorave experience.
Examples
A church hall with a high-contrast short-throw projector, a decent stereo PA with sub, blacked-out windows, and a fog machine is a viable algorave space. A lecture theatre with fixed seats and a presentation projector is not, even with live coding.
Assessment
Plan a minimal algorave setup for a 50-person capacity room with a £500 budget. Specify: speaker system, projector, room treatment choices, and justify each against the guidelines.
