Algorave is not a protected brand — anyone can host one freely

Unlike a licensed event brand or franchise, ‘Algorave’ is freely usable by anyone. The community’s guidelines explicitly state this: there is no application process, fee, or permission required to call an event an algorave. However, the name carries community norms and values (visible process, inclusive booking, safer spaces), and using it implicitly signals commitment to those norms. This matters for learners thinking about organising: you have full freedom, but you inherit the community’s expectations and join its network.

Examples

A group in a new city can announce ‘Algorave [City]’ on social media without asking anyone’s permission. But if they run a closed, exclusive, star-headliner show with no visible code, the community may push back on the branding.

Assessment

Explain to a newcomer why calling their night an ‘Algorave’ is both completely free and not consequence-free. What does the name commit you to?
