Algorave guidelines encode the scene's egalitarian ethos into how events are run

Algorave is governed by shared, explicit organiser guidelines — an emergent code of conduct (maintained openly, e.g. on GitHub, and translated into multiple languages) that turns the scene’s values into concrete event practice rather than incidental preference. Core stipulations include: the algorithmic process must be exposed (code projected/screens visible); hierarchies between performer and audience are collapsed; organisers stay wary of institutions and keep events independent; entry should be low-cost or pay-what-you-can to keep the barrier low; lineups and audiences should be diverse and gender-balanced; and events should run under a safer-space code of conduct, with respect for other communities. These guidelines matter because they show algorave’s openness is deliberate and organised, not accidental, and they have been an important gesture in changing the culture. But there is a documented critique: guidelines alone can be insufficient, and may inadvertently reinforce live coding as a predominantly white, male culture whose rules are only slightly modified to let others in — structure without full inclusion.

Examples

An organiser using the guidelines announces that performers’ screens will be visible, actively programs a gender-diverse lineup, sets a low or pay-what-you-can donation at the door, keeps the event independent of large institutions, and posts a safer-space code of conduct.

Assessment

Name three specific algorave guidelines and explain the cultural or political rationale behind each. Then state the critique that guidelines alone are insufficient for genuine inclusion.
