The algorave movement is driven by decentralised local community groups, not a central body
Community is at the centre of the algorave movement, and a large subset of algorave events are run by local community members and/or venues rather than any central organisation. City-level groups - such as Livecode.NYC and livecode.chicago - host regular events, run beginner workshops, and maintain local scenes (Livecode.NYC runs events at venues like Wonderville, including the queer-focused annual ‘Pride Wondies’; Hex House, co-founded by livecoder Char Stiles, hosts workshops to help beginners build a first algorave set). Because the model is decentralised, algorave’s character varies significantly by city, the barrier to participation stays low, and local communities own their scenes.
Examples
Livecode.NYC events at Wonderville; livecode.chicago meetups with guest workshop speakers; Hex House beginner workshops - each a locally run node with no franchising from a central body.
Assessment
Describe the algorave movement’s organisational structure and give two advantages and one risk of running a global movement through decentralised local groups.
